Integrated Security Services
Security Solutions can no longer be based soley on manpower, the most effective solutions are based on integration of technology and manpower.

The decision to cluster all the security related businesses within the Bidvest Group addresses the market trend for organizations to minimize the number of service providers that they deal with.

The formation of the security cluster coincided with the re-branding of businesses within the Bidvest Group resulting in the following changes.

  • Magnum Shield a specialist guarding company with a limited technology offering now becomes Bidvest Magnum.
  • Provicom was a standalone business offering turnkey solutions focusing on the top end of the market becomes Bidvest Magnum Technology, offering solutions that include CCTV, access card, fire detection and BMS integration.
  • Bidtrack previously Bandit specializes in vehicle tracking and recovery. The locally developed software is an essential part of the service.
  • The last piece of the puzzle is ACTS, a joint venture between Bidvest and ICTS providing highly specialist aviation related security specifically in the baggage and cargo clearing field. The company is currently responsible for the service at OR Tambo, CT International, Upington, George and Pilansberg.

The N.O.C. (National Operations Centre) is crucial to the integration of the various services.

Situated in Midrand the NOC offers the very latest in technology. The company has chosen an "agnostic" philosophy, in other words it is not bound by any product but rather that which is best suited to the client's needs.

The company is in a very strong position to offer cost effective CCTV off-site monitoring service.

The benefits of off-site monitoring include:

  • Negligible risk of collusion, intimidation and the hi-jacking of an on-site control room;
  • Higher caliber of CCTV operators;
  • Guaranteed redundancy and maintenance of equipment.

Successful security integration is dependent on a thorough understanding of the client's business and risk profile. This is achieved by conducting a professional risk assessment from which a customized Service Level Agreement (SLA) is developed, highlighting the specific Key Performance Areas (KPA) ensuring that the service is at all times measurable. Consideration is always given to the reduction of manpower through the introduction of technology when developing an integrated solution.

The Bidvest Magnum philosophy is that through the correct application and implementation of the various products/service, the risk profile of the client is reduced. Bidvest Magnum's comprehensive branch network enables the company to offer a fully integrated service on a national basis.

Case Study – Melrose Arch

The Melrose Arch precinct provides the complete urban lifestyle. The precinct is a vibrant combination of an upmarket residential component, retail outlets and state of the art commercial developments with many of S.A.'s top blue chip companies head offices situated within the precinct. Pavement cafes and restaurants provide the ultimate in African internationalism.

The owners and management team of Melrose Arch have a vision to develop the precinct into an iconic South African destination, providing "6 star" service in all that it delivers. In order to achieve this,service providers must be able to "buy in to this vision and deliver".

There can be no "finger pointing" by service providers who must take responsibility and accountability.

Understanding this philosophy enforced Bidvest Magnum's beliefs that the only viable option was to provide a fully integrated service and assume accountability for everything security related.

One of the challenges confronting Bidvest Magnum was to develop a Service Level Agreement that covered and was able to measure all the aspects of this integrated philosophy covering, manpower, CCTV, access control systems, traffic control, venue hosts, prevention and resolving of incidents and tenant / management satisfaction.

The challenge of being part of a project attaining to establish an iconic destination truly excited Bidvest Magnum recognising the vital role the company would play in the overall achievement of the vision.

To achieve the stated vision the following were recognised as critical success factors:

  • Exceptional recruitment criteria
  • Training programmes developed to address PR skills requirements, conflict management and enforcement of security regulations diplomatically.
  • CCTV surveillance training to identify suspicious behaviour.
  • Induction training that would reach all levels of security personnel, exiting them and getting them to buy in to the vision of what each of their roles are in achieving that vision.
  • Developing and employing management who understands the concept of "6 star". This required unwavering belief and energy to never accept "average".
  • Traffic management is a key priority at the precinct with Security Officers dedicated to the task of traffic management and control.
  • The expanse of the precinct is 150 000m² approximately and requires Security Officers to be exceptionally mobile. This was achieved through an innovative solution utilizing Segeways.
  • Bidvest Magnum System.
  • The Service Level Agreement around camera downtime is exceptionally stringent as the surveillance system is used to pro-actively detect and prevent crime as well as effective manpower management, a critical factor in complying with the security budget.
  • Finally and most importantly to develop a relationship between Bidvest Magnum as a service provider and Melrose Arch owners and management team that would establish a team with a common vision.

The most appropriate example of the team spirit that exists is an example during the Wold Cup where on many occasions when traffic volumes were at their highest, Directors from both companies could be seen directing traffic.
